Hand Washing

1.Why hand washing is important?

(1)Hand washing, when done correctly, is the easiest and most efficient way to enhance personal hygiene and to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

(2)Infection and transmitted diseases can be prevented by washing hands correctly.

2.When should I wash my hands?

(1)Before touching eyes, nose, and mouth.

(2)Before eating

(3)Before and after preparing food

(4)After going to the toilet

(5)When hands are contaminated by respiratory secretion, eg. After sneezing and coughing.

(6)After touching public equipment such as rails of escalator, buttons of elevators, door handles.

(7)After changing nappies and cleaning up soiled things or personal waste.

3.Hand washing tips:

(1)Warm water is more effective in cleaning hands than cold water (water temperature between 38 and 42 Celsius degree).

(2)Remove rings or other decoration before washing hands.

(3)Washing hands thoroughly with bar soap or hand wash liquid.

(4)It’s better to wash hands more than 20-30 seconds.

(5)Let the water run back into the sink, not down to your elbows when rinsing hands.

(6)Do not dry hands on one’s body or on a face towel because the clean hands can be contaminated again by the germs on the body or towel. Disposable paper towel is recommended.

(7)Fingernails need to be cut and kept clean.

4.Five steps of hand washing:

(1)Wet- wet hands including wrist, palm and fingers under the running water.

(2)Rub- apply soap or hand wash liquid, then rub hands together, wash the front and back of your hands, as well as between fingers and under your nails for at least 20 seconds.

(3)Rinse- rinse hands thoroughly under running water.

(4)Hold- use hands as a cup to hold water to clean taps, or use paper towel to turn off water taps.

(5)Dry- use paper towel, clean hand towel or handkerchief to dry hands.
