The Division of Nephrology was independently founded from the division of Endocrine & Metabolism in 1979. The first chief of division, Dr. Shiao, established the fifth hemodialysis center in Taiwan. Dr. Wu was the second chief of division in 1985 and then Dr. Kuo took office the third chief of division in 1990. During the Dr. Kuo`s management， peritoneal dialysis center was established in 1995 and also expanded the business of hemodialysis center. By the time Dr. Kuo's retirement on April 25, 2005，the business of hemodialysis center had reached 1,950 person-time per month and 21 patients underwent the therapy of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
The Division of Nephrology provides 30-40 general and 30 hemodialysis beds，3 nephrologists is responsible for patient-care teaching and research. Diagnostic methods include urinalysis， biochemistry，trace elements，hormones，radiology，ultrasonography，CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging，etc.
Renal biopsy (immunofluorescence，light and electron microscopy) is also used for diagnosing various renal disorders. Renal function laboratory offers information and data for those patients presenting with electrolyte and acid-base disturbance.
Treatment modalities include drugs，diet， hemodialysis，continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis，plasmaphoresis， hemoperfusion and continuous renal replacement therapy. Hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treat patient with acute or chronic renal failure， poisoning and heatstroke with rhabdomyolysis.
CRRT(continous renal replacement therapy) including CVVH，CVVHD treat patient with renal failure under unstable hemodynamic status.
