1. Can ultrasound help make the diagnosis?
Yes. Many clinicians order this test 1st, to avoid possible aspiration of contrast material.
2. Why is so much chloride lost?
The chloride loss occurs with the loss of gastric acid, which contains hydrochloric acid.
3. What plan should I follow when replacing electrolytes?
Correct the deficiency of fluids with twice-maintenance fluid volumes. Correct chloride loss with normal saline, and co rrect potassium loss with potassium chloride.
