The Centers for Disease Control (hereafter referred to as CDC) stated today (the 8th) that domestic influenza entered the epidemic period last week, while the novel coronavirus continues to pose a transmission risk. The public is urged to strengthen hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette and other good hygiene practices. If fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat or other respiratory symptoms appear, it is recommended to wear a mask, seek medical care promptly, and rest at home.
The CDC pointed out that in week 35 (8/30-9/5) there were 115,136 influenza-related outpatient and emergency visits, an increase of 11.0% from the previous week, showing an upward trend recently; the emergency visit proportion reached 11.2%, exceeding the epidemic threshold (11.0%), entering the epidemic period. In addition, last week (9/1-9/7) there were 105 new severe influenza cases (97 H1N1, 4 H3N2, 4 untyped A) and 19 deaths (18 H1N1, 1 untyped A). Laboratory surveillance data show that the influenza viruses circulating in the community are mainly type A, with A(H1N1) accounting for 79.4%. In the current (114-115) influenza season, a total of 1,329 severe cases (717 H1N1, 498 H3N2, 24 untyped A, 90 type B) and 253 deaths (131 H1N1, 102 H3N2, 8 untyped A, 12 type B) have been recorded, with severe cases predominantly among seniors aged 65 and over (65.1%) and those with chronic disease histories (82.8%); 68.6% had not received this season’s influenza vaccine.
According to CDC monitoring data, the domestic COVID‑19 situation has declined but remains in the epidemic period. In week 35 (8/30-9/5) there were 20,199 COVID‑19 outpatient and emergency visits, a 9.7% decrease from the previous week (8/23-8/29); last week (9/1-9/7) there were 73 new domestic severe cases and 15 domestic deaths. Since October 2025, a total of 622 domestic severe COVID‑19 cases have been recorded, including 106 deaths; severe cases were mainly among seniors aged 65 and over (72.7%) and those with chronic disease histories (83.0%); 84.9% had not received this season’s COVID‑19 vaccine. In the past four weeks, the dominant domestic variant has been PQ.16.1.1.
The CDC again reminds the public that if they experience sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, fever, fatigue, headache, or muscle aches, they should first use a home COVID‑19 rapid test for self‑screening, then seek medical care promptly and inform the physician of the test result, or go directly to a clinic. If dangerous signs such as difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, cyanosis (lack of oxygen), blood‑tinged sputum or thickened sputum, chest pain, altered consciousness, low blood pressure, or high fever lasting 72 hours occur, they should seek medical care immediately to receive timely treatment.
