Organ Donation, Let Love Continue
Organ donation is based on the patient's prior consent or family agreement; at brain death or end of life, usable organs or tissues are donated to patients in urgent need of transplantation, helping to save lives. Organ donation embodies mutual assistance and reciprocity, so the amendment in Year 103 allowed organ donation not only to help others but also to benefit one's own family. In the future, if a spouse or blood relative within the third degree needs an organ transplant, they will receive priority.
Life is unpredictable; we cannot know whether tomorrow will come first or death will come first. Nowadays people begin to understand career planning, making wills, even planning for after death, yet they forget that the body is also an important asset. When life reaches its end, being able to donate usable organs gives life even greater value. A couple in their 60s once said: “We signed up for organ donation many years ago, for palliative care, and recently we also signed an advance medical decision under the Patient Autonomy Act, deciding our own matters without burdening our children or other family members.” “After all, when we die we are cremated; if we can still donate to help others, that’s even better.” The donor’s family also shared: “Organ donation makes them feel that their loved one continues to live on.”
We cannot avoid death, but we can prepare for it in a more meaningful way. When facing major life events, it may be an ending or a beginning; giving others a new lease on life is the continuation of our own existence. If you have a wish or intention to donate organs, you can note it on your National Health Insurance card. In June (112) a newly created “Organ Donation Voiceprint Card” allows you to record your consent for organ donation and convey it to your family, though it is recommended to discuss it with them first. Life has an end, but great love is limitless; let us use organ donation to pass love on.
