Endless Passion for 802 – Interview with Ageless Volunteer Cai Maorui

I am Cai Maorui, I started my enlistment in the 61st year of the Republic. My military career lasted a total of 20 years. On August 31, 1994 (Minguo 83) I was transferred to the ROC Army Kaohsiung General Hospital, serving as a lieutenant colonel political staff officer, until I was discharged on August 31, 1996 (Minguo 85). By chance, after discharge I changed status to a civilian employee, and from September 1, 1996 (Minguo 85) I continued to stay at the hospital.

During my service at the hospital, I first served as the head of the laundry department. The former laundry department was located where the staff cafeteria is now, with only two employees and two non‑commissioned officers, mainly responsible for washing the uniforms and linens of all military ward patients. Later, because all laundry work was outsourced, the laundry department was abolished, and I was transferred to the medical service team to handle inpatient military meal expenses and manage the staff cafeteria. At that time, the staff cafeteria was located where the current health examination center is. Previously, the meals for hospitalized soldiers were handled by conscripted food service soldiers; I remember most vividly that these soldiers also baked bread themselves, offering it to patients to attract more civilians to seek treatment at the hospital.

After leaving the medical service team, I also worked in the medical department responsible for hospital accreditation. The former medical department had only four people, and its office was the ENT office in front of the current staff cafeteria; although it was a small space, it was enough for us! Later, I became the secretary of the civilian outpatient department, which at that time was located where the current social services office is. Because it was close to the hospital office, I still remember that Director Meng Xiangyue once came to the civilian outpatient department before work one morning and said to me, “Little Cai, turn on all the lights on the second floor.” From that day on, whenever I started work I was responsible for turning on all the lights on the hospital’s second floor. Finally, I transferred to the administration team, mainly handling civilian employee salaries, overseas travel procedures, and issuance of certificates, until I retired on January 27, 2017 (Minguo 106) upon reaching retirement age. Counting from my military service period, I have served at the hospital for almost 23 years!

Since retiring in 2017 (Minguo 106) up to now (Minguo 113), I have returned to the hospital as a volunteer, mainly to see old colleagues and assist with administrative tasks, continuing to serve unpaid at this place I know so well; in my free time I also enjoy mountain climbing and traveling abroad. Now I am almost 74 years old, and I hope everyone takes good care of their health, because health is the most important thing; only with a healthy body can we do more of the things we want to do.
